At the end of summer is always a great time to look at closet organization. The reason is you will probably be changing your wardrobe over from light and small summer clothes to heavy and bulky winter clothes. It is also a good time to organize because you probably haven’t even looked at some of your winter wear in a good 9 months. Here are some things to consider as you start preparing for fall when it comes to your wardrobe and closet.
Take an Inventory
It is very important that you take a good inventory of your closet and look at what you wear the most, the least, and not at all. If you haven’t worn an item of clothing in over a year, it is time to donate it. The same is true for any items that don’t fit anymore either.
Depending on the item, men’s clothes and jackets can usually be tailored. So, before you donate, check with your husband to make sure that it really does need to go, or if he needs to take it in for alteration.
Store The Summer Stuff
If your closet is as seasonal as mine is, it is okay to look at some of your summer stuff and store it. The same is true during the spring, when you can store some of your winter stuff. I actually have two totes that I rotate through, and simply change out the summer and winter stuff each year. They then go in the hall closet until the spring.
Organize
Once you’ve sorted and stored, it is time to get organizing. The first thing you should do is choose the right hanger. Your closet will look so much better if you use all of the same type of hanger for all items. Then, make sure you have the right hanger for pants, suits, and shirts and blouses.
For blouses and shirts, I like to sort my closet by sleeve length, then by shade. I keep like colors with like colors, and move from light to dark. This lets me see what I can pair for my outfits.
For folded items, make sure that you store these on shelves, and don’t try to hang them. If you hang them, they could stretch out of shape and be ruined. I keep like items folded together, like workout wear and underwear. If you don’t have shelves in your closet, consider getting hanging shelves to hang on the clothing rod.
