What To Do When You Suffer A Sports Injury

October 10, 2017
By

A sports injury can occur at any moment from even the smallest movement. There is nothing like a sudden, unbearable pain to cause feelings of panic, but it is important to remain calm and take care of the injury right away. Below are tips to help you stay in control when you suffer a sports injury.

Rest

It is important to rest the sore area during the first 48 to 72 hours of injury. You may need to take a break from physical activity and change your routine for several days. Once the time of rest has passed, you can build up strength by moving or exercising the injured area.

Ice and Heat

You should only use ice within the first 48 to 72 hours to reduce the pain and swelling. You want to apply the ice three times a day for 10 to 20 minutes per application. Once the swelling has gone down, you can start applying heat to ease the pain and tension in your muscles. It is best to apply the heat several times a day for 20 minutes per application. You should never apply the ice or heat directly to your skin.

Compression

Wrap the injured area with an elastic bandage for 48 to 72 hours, and be careful not to wrap it too tightly because this may cause more swelling or pain in the area. Consult your doctor if you need to keep it bandaged for more than 72 hours.

Elevation

You need to elevate the injury above your heart to minimize the swelling, especially if the injury is in your hand or ankle. One idea is to elevate the injured area on several pillows whenever you are sitting or lying down. Do not forget to apply ice to the elevated area.

Consult The Doctor

If the pain or swelling does not go down within 72 hours, it is time to consult your doctor. Your doctor may refer you to Middletown Medical Imaging for an open MRI or digital x-ray. This way, your doctor can accurately diagnose and treat your sports injury.

The pain of a sports related injury may be too much to bear, but it is important to take care of the injury before it becomes worse. If you remain calm, consult a doctor and follow the above steps, you are sure to feel better before you know it.

Tips For Keeping Your Kids Healthy During Cold And Flu Season

October 10, 2017
By

All parents know that as the days get shorter and the winds get colder, out comes the thermometers and the cold medicine. During the winter season it seems that colds and the flu are a never-ending cycle when you have children. Thankfully, there are many great Sambucol products for kids that you can purchase from reputable online companies such as health365.com.au. To try and fend off some of the germs, follow the tips below to try and keep sickness at bay with your little ones.

Preventative Medicine

The best way to fight the flu or a cold is to prevent it from happening in the first place. The Center for Disease Control has recommended that all kids ages six months and older received a flu vaccine every year. Also, be sure your children go in for their annual checkups when it is recommended.

Keep Hands Washed

Another great tip for keeping your kids healthy during cold and flu season is to have them constantly wash their hands. While it may seem like such a simple thing, keeping your hands clean and washed really does make a difference. A research study conducted in London had found that if everyone regularly kept their hands washed, it could prevent millions of people dying each year.

Get Enough Sleep

The body’s immune system doesn’t work at its full efficiency when it is sleep deprived. During the winter time, your children should be sure to get a full night of sleep. Many school-age kids require at least ten to eleven hours of sleep each night. Babies and toddlers require even more than that.

Proper Sneezing Etiquette

Many kids are known for sneezing all over everything. This can potentially spread harmful germs to friends, family and siblings. It is recommended that you teach your kids to sneeze into their elbows or a handkerchief to help prevent the spread of germs.

Eat Healthy

Eating a well-balanced diet is the best way to maintain your health. While certain foods do help increase immunity a little bit, there are no magic types of food. A healthy balance of lean protein, plant-based foods and drinking lots of water can keep your body running well enough to fight off some common cold and flu symptoms.

Keep Sick Kids Home

If your children do end up catching a cold or the flu, it is best to keep them away from their siblings and friends. It is also a good idea to keep them home from school and their extracurricular activities. Keeping them home to rest can allow them to heal faster and not infect everyone they come into contact with.

Rethink Medicine

Our bodies were designed to fight off colds and flu symptoms naturally on their own without the help of medicine. While it is difficult to see our children suffer, sometimes it’s best to let their bodies fight off the infections themselves. Giving your children too much medicine often, especially unnecessary and unneeded antibiotics, can have negative effects on their immune systems.

It isn’t too difficult to keep your kids and your family safe and healthy during the cold and flu seasons. The same exact healthy measures you would use on a regular basis are the exact same guidelines you will use to fight off and prevent illnesses.

Three Crucial Steps for Anti-Aging Success

October 6, 2017
By

Some people have no problem with the effects of aging and simply embrace the wrinkles and lines of time that come with living. But most people are determined not to show their age on the face. For this majority of people, good skincare and habits can make all the difference in how rapidly one appears to age.

Unfortunately, there is also a lot of bad information about aging, which leaves people feeling confused about their options. It turns out, however, that most of the important aspects of anti-aging success are actually quite simple and do not require complicated regimens, expensive creams, or extensive procedures. For most people, only three steps are necessary to keep the worst of aging at bay.

The first and most important aspect of an anti-aging regimen is wearing sunscreen. You should wear sunscreen every single day, even if you’re not planning on spending any time relaxing in the sun. Sun damage is the single most destructive element for your face, causing wrinkles, lines, dryness, hyperpigmentation, and rough skin texture. Wear at least 30 SPF every day and make sure to apply more sunscreen for every two hours that are spent in the sun. Wear a hat and sunglasses for even better protection, and don’t forget to protect the rest of your body, especially your neck, decolletage, shoulders, and arms.

Next, look into using simple anti-aging formulas that moisturize. If you want an extra boost, add Vitamin C to your regimen. Moisturizing regularly, however, is absolutely essential to making your skin look healthy and firm every day. When you don’t moisturize, your skin will look dull and dry, and your wrinkles and lines will be much more apparent. You don’t need an expensive moisturizer to do the trick. In fact, some people use petroleum jelly with great success.

Finally, don’t be afraid to contact a professional dermatologist for the best results. Shop around and find a local professional who can help you look your best. For example, if you need advanced dermatology Colorado, look for a trusted practitioner like Colorado Skincare to meet your needs. A professional dermatologist can prescribe powerful anti-aging medications like retinol and can even perform laser surgery or other facial adjustments.

Don’t be afraid to fight the signs of aging by taking good care of your skin. It’s never too early to start caring about your appearance.

Leather Wallets For Millennials

October 3, 2017
By

Since humans could walk, they’ve needed places to put their things. The wallet, for men and women, can be traced back into centuries of history.

Past
Many artifacts have been found in history going back to our first steps including items we used to carry things. As early as 1500’s Europe there have been variations of a leather or animal-made folding device refereed to as what is translated as wallet. Even Shakespeare wrote about the wallet in his play “Troilus and Cressida.”

“Time hath, my lord, a wallet at his back, wherein he puts alms for oblivion, a great-sized monster of ingratitudes.”

Wallets were used in the 1800’s to carry tobacco. The leather packing and tight fold created a safe haven for the tobacco and a pouch easy to tuck away. The wallet was used for many practical uses until it became a fashion accessory.

Who can forget the one and only time the velcro wallet existed around the 1970’s? This style reflected a cheaper version of a necessary tool.

Current

Much like the watch that evolved with practical usage, the wallet doesn’t serve all the purposes it once did. In fact, the purse that holds the wallet now carries those miscellaneous items. While the leather wallet goes back to the Greeks, it will never go out of style. Wallets today are made from other materials such as plastic, washable materials, neon signs with messages, and are multi-patterned. Of course, the name of the designer gives most wallets their value over their actual material.

Some of the more modern examples of wallets can be found at manufactures such as www.ibricraft.com. Today, the leather wallet certainly carries on, though with more design and compartment options. While we are a society that uses less cash and more cards, the wallet reflects our changing society. Many wallets today are designed to reflect our personalities as much as performing the task of carrying our things.

Future

One can only imagine the future of the wallet. As our lives become more digital and on-line, the need for plastic and paper will grow less. But we’ll always have a need for a place to put our things that travel with us including our phones and digital devices.

The wallet has been around as long as humans have needed to carry things. They are as much a part of our history as paper, writing, and language.
